To better manage human-tiger conflict (HTC), we install real-time cameras at sites most prone to HTC in our study areas in Aceh and West Sumatra. Notifications of tiger images are received in real time, less than 60 seconds from camera trigger to appearance in the smart phone app. These images can then be used to inform authorities, trusted rangers, and/or other project collaborators of tiger presence around, for example, a livestock herding field. Herders can be notified and take proper actions such as herding cattle in livestock enclosures until the tiger is no longer detected in the area. Prevention of livestock depredation – aided by trained rangers and operation of real-time cameras – is one of the best ways to avoid retaliatory killings of tigers.
